Paul Ryan Outraised In Home District by Congressional Opponent

According to this story from the Janesville Gazette, Paul Ryan's spokesperson, Kevin Seifert, considers Democratic opponent Rob Zerban's request for debates nothing more than a "stunt" and implies that Zerban should explain his positions on critical issues and articulate solutions to the problems facing the nation. Knock - knock. Hello? Hello? Isn't that precisely what debates are for?

But if the latest fundraising numbers reported by the Zerban campaign are any sign of his surging popularity, it is also a sign of rejection for Paul Ryan and his 14 year stranglehold on the district. Perhaps district constituents have already made up their mind on the absentee congressman.

The third quarter fundraising numbers are in.

Politico Excerpt:
Paul Ryan outraised by House opponent

Zerban’s campaign announced Thursday that it raised $770,000 in the third quarter of 2012, outpacing Rep. Paul Ryan.

Ryan’s House campaign raised $566,743 from 2,700 individual donors with a largely absent candidate.

Whose Side Is The DCCC On?

It's easy to understand why the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) uses Paul Ryans' Randian class war budget manifesto to pound on GOP congressional candidates. Ryan's ideological claptrap is the gift that keeps on giving. For those obvious reasons, the DCCC has anti-Ryan Medicare Killing robocalls, emails and campaign ads running in defense of democratic House candidates nearly everywhere in the country - except for Ryan's challenger, Rob Zerban. That doesn't make sense.

Down With Tyranny rightfully takes the DCCC to task over that and issues a direct challenge to the DCCC to support Zerban with some campaign cashola. But I think there's an even bigger problem here ...

Down With Tyranny Excerpt:
For the last two weeks, the DCCC has urged candidates to found Ryan's anti-Medicare budget. That's fine. But do they do anything for Rob Zerban? Not that I've seen. And when I speak to DCCC-connected major donors, they tell me Steve Israel discourages them from donating to Zerban's campaign.

Say what?

In July of 2011 after the upset victory in upstate New York's special election, Steve Israel had this to say...

Huff post Excerpt:
"We have an excellent Democratic candidate named Rob Zerban who got into the race largely because he couldn't tolerate Paul Ryan's leadership on a plan to terminate Medicare, while funding tax cuts for big oil companies," DCCC Chair Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) told The Huffington Post in a late-night interview Tuesday. "So that's one district where the political landscape may change."

So what has changed?

If there's any truth to the "discouraging donations to Zerban" statement by DWT, and there's no reason for anyone to doubt it, Israel has some 'splainin' to do.

It's one thing to finally recognize Zerban's candidacy in the 1st Congressional District as an "emerging race," and I can even spin the idea that Ryan serves as an able stooge and gift that the Democratic Party hasn't seen in years. No problem. I can even understand some unwillingness to commit some real money right now ...although that seems to be a more indefensible position with each passing day. But to discourage donations to Ryan's challenger? Every dollar pulled away from Rob Zerban is another dollar in Ryan's pocket. That's not only just brutal, but if Israel or the DCCC are actively discouraging donations to a democratic challenger to Paul Ryan, or any viable democratic candidate,  it reeks of an unforgivable duplicity that's ...traitorous. Come on ...say it ain't so.

Ed Schultz or Rachel Maddow should have Israel or Wasserman-Schultz appear on their show to clarify their position and issue their official endorsement for the 1st CD of Wisconsin and back it up with a check.

I'm not purposely trying to make it too difficult for the democrats at the DCCC, but it's either Paul Ryan or Rob Zerban.

Are you kidding me?

Comment From Hullabaloo:
No, it's not "one or the other." But the reason they don't want to fight Ryan is because they would rather keep him around to raise money for the surrender in the battle against privatising Medicare. Without Ryan, there is no one to force them to do what they want to do but what they don't want to be seen as wanting to do. -- yournamehere

Video: Rob Zerban's County Kick-Off Tour!

Impressive turn-outs for Zerban's campaign kick-off.

Excerpt from Zerban's Video Introduction:

There were no stadium tours, no charges to get in, and no PowerPoint presentations! My goal is to show voters what real representation looks like.

I usually get up at 5:30 AM and don't get back until after 10:00 PM, and I enjoy every minute of it. I am used to hard work. My constituents are used to hard work too. They know that hard work pays off and our grassroots work is elevating the debate and building the foundation for a winning race.

We are bringing in Democrats and Independents, but we are also reaching beyond. More Republicans are joining our campaign every day because they understand the GOP and Paul Ryan have abandoned their principles and lost their way. Everyone understands it is time for new leadership.

Zerban Picks Up Feingold Endorsement - Makes Granholm's "Race To Watch"

Along with the race for the White House, Elizabeth Warren vs Scott Brown and Tammy Baldwin's run for the open senate seat, Jennifer Granholm of The War Room also picks the Rob Zerban/Paul Ryan House race among the top twelve political match-ups to watch this year.

The War Room Excerpt:
As a bonus, let’s add one House race to the list—it’s one that is already drawing national interest—the run for Wisconsin’s 1st congressional district, currently held by chairman of the House Budget Committee Republican Paul Ryan. Since introducing a radical federal budget and ... more>>>

Also, Rob Zerban earned an endorsement from Sen. Russ Feingold...

Feingold:
"Rob Zerban understands the struggles of working and middle class families here in Wisconsin, and across the country.

Rob Zerban shares my priorities of helping working families, honoring our commitment to our seniors by protecting Social Security and Medicare, safeguarding women's rights, our natural resources, and our rights and freedoms. Most importantly, Rob Zerban shares my commitment to making the economy work for every American, not just the wealthiest among us. That's why I am proud to endorse Rob Zerban in his challenge to Congressman Paul Ryan."

Rob Zerban 'Ask Me Anything' Session at Reddit

Check this page out. It's two days old, but there are over 2,000 comments posted during the open discussion with Rob Zerban, challenger to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) in 2012. Thumbs Up!!

Reddit Excerpt:
Twoodeep: So can you state a few of your positions on these for us now?

Rob Zerban: Here are some core issues for me: Ending the money in politics by supporting the Move to Amend, publicly financed elections, and any other vehicle to end the corrupting influence of money. Enhancing health care reform with a public option or Medicare for all. Job creation by investing in infrastructure and any other programs to employ the unemployed, and ending free trade deals and replacing them with fair trade deals that will protect manufacturing jobs in the district. Investing in education and research to create innovation for the future. Shifting our tax code to benefit small and medium-size businesses, not large corporations with large lobbying firms. Enhancing financial reform and protecting consumers. Finally, protecting Social Security and Medicare from Republican attempts at privatization.

I think any and all of these ideas would help Wisconsin and this district, but my focus in the campaign will be on the more generally popular issues including manufacturing jobs and economic recovery, Paul Ryan's corrupt funding sources, stopping the wasteful tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, and the need to defend seniors programs. These are the issues I think the electorate will be most responsive to.

Twoodeep: I wasn't expecting such a thorough and honest answer. I'm not in Wisconsin, so the best vote I can give you is up.

Video: The Truth About Paul Ryan

I consider this short video about Paul Ryan near the top for explaining how he wants the potential and future of the wage earning class to pay for all the spending and debt he borrowed for during his time in Congress. Simpy put, Ryan wants to punish the poor in the name of “upward mobility” for not being rich. Dick Cheney, who worships the ground Ryan walks on, once said, "deficits don't matter." The best part of course is there is a clear and solid alternative to this scourge. His name is Rob Zerban.

Another Unholy Alliance With Paul Ryan. When Will Some Democrats Learn?

Politico Excerpt:
It was a rare moment on Capitol Hill Wednesday afternoon when Reps. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) united to promote an initiative that they said proves that “we don’t always go at each other’s throats around here.”

In a joint TV interview, the odd couple on the House Budget Committee rallied support for the line-item veto legislation, which they had introduced earlier in the day.

President Obama on line-item veto, "I think there's not a President out there that wouldn't love to have it."

Of course! Heh, heh, heh.

This is eerily similar to the time when Russ Feingold teamed up with Paul "Progressives are a cancer" Ryan on the same legislation.

As far as I'm concerned, Paul Ryan was the kiss of death for Russ Feingold and given the heightened sensitivity to Wall Street sell-out politicians like Paul Ryan among the electorate, Chris Van Hollen sold out the 99% with this terrible, terrible move. We're watching.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm crazy about Feingold but that was one of two times in the past twelve years I was embarrassed by his position. Not a bad record, but if there's one thing about fundamental freedom-loving Wisconsinites and true blue Progressives, it's that we never blindly follow our champions when they steer off the path and we're not afraid to tell them that. The blog Down With Tyranny had harsh words for the Ryan/Van Hollen unholy alliance, I completely agree, and also noticed that Wisconsinites don't sell out our independence for a smile and a wink.

Down With tyranny Excerpt:
I always like a Democrat willing to stand up for the 99%-- even if that means standing up to the craven power structure inside of his own party. People in Wisconsin are pretty independent-minded.

Down With Tyranny was referring to Democratic candidate for the 1st congressional District of Wisconsin, Rob Zerban.

According to this article in the Janesville Gazette, Zerban doesn't feel comfortable with the line-item veto because he believes it is unconstitutional. That's good reason enough to oppose it.

But the political blogger at the newspaper poked and scolded Zerban on his position and suggested Zerban needs a refresher course in American Government & Politics.

The blogger implied Zerban's "unconstitutional" position was a poor reason to oppose the legislation since the bill must become law first and only afterwards then proceed through the judicial review process. But if I recall, the entire GOP caucus voted against Obama's Health Care Reform Act ...because ...they thought it to be unconstitutional. So, is Rob Zerban the only one not entitled to form an opinion against legislation because he thinks it might not pass constitutional muster? Is it okay for members of Congress to oppose legislation before it goes through the judicial process? You bet it's okay. Zerban was right to issue his opposition in that context. This attack on Zerban was totally uncalled for and without merit.

Rob Zerban is exactly the kind of thinking we need in Congress to stop the wholesale selling out of America. If you'd like to help Zerban's campaign, check out the Stop Paul Ryan ActBlue page - it's open 24/7.

I've written fairly extensively about the Janesville line-item veto in the past and, only with the assumption it is constitutional, find it to be an abhorrent expansion of executive powers that will politicize the pork barrel earmark process more than it already is - as if anyone thought THAT was more possible. Look no further than this legislation.

InsurCorps Pouring Money Into Ryan's Campaign

According to this article, Rob Zerban, Democratic primary candidate for the 1st Congressional District of Wisconsin, has raised more money this quarter than any of Ryan's previous challengers since Ryan was elected. Zerban stated that the average contribution to his campaign is $42.

You can donate to Zerban's campaign to defeat Paul Ryan here.

Paul Ryan's campaign war chest on the other hand, more now than ever before, is gorging itself like a vampire squid wrapped around the face of Wall Street. Around this same period (July 2009) for his 2010 campaign, Ryan reported $1.28 million with 82 percent of his donors giving $100 or less. This year, Ryan reports $3.8 million cash on hand to date with 77 percent giving $100 or less.

Excerpt:
Ryan’s campaign said 77 percent of the individual contributions since the beginning of 2011 year were $100 or less.

During each of the last three congressional elections, I've spent hours paging through Paul Ryan's campaign reports and this is what I've found. I found when you're dealing with statements from Ryan's campaign you have to think like you're dealing with the crooked'est used car dealer in the city. They don't mean 77 percent of the $3.8 million came from individuals giving $100 or less. No-no, not at all. What they really mean by 77 percent is about 4000 individuals (apprx.) contributed around $240,000 to his campaign while the rest, $3,560,000 of the $3.8 million reported, came from about 1,300 contributions (23%) funneled from 100 Big Corps entities.

Just like dealing with a slick-shady used car salesman, it's never ever what you thought you've heard at first from Paul Ryan. It's always that initial doubt that you curse yourself for by being duped, but only after you're left stranded in the road holding an empty bag.
