Janesville Gazette Does a Comb-Over For Republican Neal Kedzie

What a stunningly gaudy political campaign presentation plastered on the front page of the Wednesday's Janesville Gazette for Republican State Senator Neal Kedzie.

The article headlined, Finding Solutions and Successes was replete with supporting quotes and flattering photographs, served absolutely no purpose other than to defend Kedzie and his "leadership" role on the state's ad hoc mining committee. This is the same mining committee that for all practical political purposes, stands as the symbol of the republican's epic legislative fail in that disaster. Of course I don't blame Kedzie for the committee's failure, afterall, the burden of the blame rests squarely on Sen. Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald for abruptly disbanding the committee with two minutes left in the game.

But what I did find out of the ordinary was the Gazette's writing props to defend and elevate what is in all actuality, a legislator who by his own actions serves as nothing more than a GOP party puppet.

JG Excerpt:
Kedzie was out as a leader on the mining issue. Without his leadership, no mining bill passed and the mine withdrew its interest in Wisconsin.

What a strange play on words. Is that why Gogebic Taconite withdrew its business interest? Because without Kedzie leading the way, it was hopeless? I don't buy it at all.

JG Excerpt:
Kedzie, never one to publicly criticize his party or its leaders, accepted the demotion without comment.

Members of his committee and others, all Democrats, jumped to Kedzie's defense.

It figures. Democrats jumped to his defense. But why…why would anyone publicly go to the defense of another politician, be it Democratic or Republican, who would rather stay quiet ...than stand up for himself and speak up for what he believes is right? I can understand Democrats standing with him if Kedzie pushed back a little or defended himself. But to accept the demotion without comment? Yet the writer, the Gazette's ever loyal Stan Milam, spends a half a page afterwards endorsing Kedzie as "standing firm," a consensus builder and leader? A leader who apparently never questions or criticizes his party or it's leaders??

The Gazette published this story as a front-page headline news article. People actually pay money to read that stuff.

I'll leave the rest up to you.

SeniorCare Demise Another Ryan Trophy

In Wednesday’s Janesville Gazette a letter titled “Loss of SeniorCare in Wisconsin is not Congressman Ryan’s fault” was in rebuttal to another letter printed last week daring Rep. Paul Ryan to help save the state program. Wednesday’s writer hated to confuse the issue with the facts that Ryan signed a Wisconsin delegation letter to request an extension of SeniorCare from the Federal Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). That Ryan signed this blanket request was merely a formality of political posturing necessary to at least save face with his own state.

While at the Capitol, Ryan shows his true colors repeatedly by voting the party line for cutting non-security discretionary spending to the bone. In fact, and I hate to confuse the issue, Ryan is not only the spokesman, but a leading author for the Republican version of upcoming Federal budgets where he boasts that budgets can be balanced by merely cutting domestic spending. Ryan may not have SeniorCare specifically on his spending cut wishlist, but when pressed on which programs he recommends to cut, he is too embarrassed to name them. And who could blame him?

The very administration that Ryan has rubber stamped for the past six years is responsible for the slow death of programs just like SeniorCare. We can be assured that Rep. Baldwin and Obey were not among that group but, Ryan was.

JG Letter Excerpt:
SeniorCare is not even in Ryan's (or any of the federal representative's) jurisdiction, so I applaud him for his effort to intercede. – letter writer
Pardon me? SeniorCare may be a state run program, but its fate and funding is predicated on mandates and stipulations written in the Medicare Part D Republican nightmare. When HR 1 Medicare Part D passed in the 108th Congress, Ryan, Sensenbrenner, Petri and Green all voted for it, while all Wisconsin Democrats voted against it.

The primary duty Paul Ryan owes to the 1st Congressional District of Wisconsin is to do the work of the people in the Capitol. He is not there to represent Wal-Mart, Exxon, Pfizer, AT &T, President Bush or Iraq. First on the list of duties are to bring home a fair share of funds to be redistributed through programs just like SeniorCare. Paul Ryan is his district’s only connection to the Fed regarding policy and appropriations, the same goes for Baldwin, Obey and others in their respective districts. The difference here again with Ryan is, he has brought home very little to his district over the years and has gone on record he will bring home even less.

I’m not defending anyone, even the Democrats on the death of SeniorCare, but I will certainly put the blame where blame is due. The loss of SeniorCare may not be solely Ryan’s fault, but when it comes to ushering in the bills and policies that will lead to its demise, he is front and center. No matter what he says now.

If Green is Governor

In the final gubernatorial debate, Green started off by saying that if you want details and answers, go to his website at www.Green.etc.com. That’s about what you can expect from him if elected governor. Contrary to media reports placing the blame game on Doyle, Green answered nearly every question on the issues facing Wisconsin by blaming Doyle for everything. But that is to be expected considering he wants Doyle’s job. But it’s more fair for Doyle to bring up Green’s record in Congress and place some blame there. Doyle doesn’t want Green’s job, so his reasoning for blaming Green is strictly done to place blame where blame is due.

According to Green, everything is somebodies fault while indirectly implying that decisions he made in Congress are relatively inconsequential to the state of Wisconsin. He says Doyle rigged the elections board, the Indian gambling compact, and the State Supreme Court. If you listen to Green, Doyle’s rigged everything under the Sun. Doyle is accused of having so much power, I’m surprised Green has the courage to oppose him.

Green noted that the elections board voted along party lines, and for that reason, it should not stand. I guess we could cancel or recall all the bills, decisions and initiatives in Congress that have been passed along party lines using that logic. One only has to look around at the major changes that have taken place in the past six years to realize that Mark Green and his Republican friends are part of the problem, not the solution. Without Green’s Congressional record he has absolutely nothing to run on but denial, so his only recourse is to blame the other guy. Green’s past as a rubberstamper of many special interest bills and Bush initiatives is well documented.
Democrats are of the opinion that they can make hay out of Green’s voting record by claiming he’s a Bush rubberstamp. To what group is this effort aimed? – Stan Milam, columnist
How about the entire electorate, Stan. Hardly anyone knew of Mark Green before he began his run for governor of Wisconsin, if we can’t bring up Green’s record in Congress, what’s left to talk about?

The facts are clear, Mark Green has been quietly rubber-stamping 92% of the policies, bills and initiatives of one of the most narrow-minded and incompetent presidents in modern times. Without knowing Green’s past history, many voters could mistake him for someone who cares.

This is where Green stands. He supported the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy which actually fuels higher local taxes. He voted for corporate breaks encouraging job outsourcing. He voted for the Bush war in Iraq and granted, much of America has been duped by the Bush Administration’s call to war, but what’s his excuse now for his continued unwavering support. He wants to use Federal money to support private education with vouchers further degrading quality and participation in public schools. But with investments for the common good, Green refuses to allow Federal money to advance breakthroughs on finding cures for Alzheimers, diabetes, Parkinsons, cancer or AIDS. Green supports oil drilling in the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge under the guise of cheaper oil. He voted for the Bush nightmarish prescription plan and to deny access to cheaper prescriptions from Canada. If you want someone like George W. Bush for your governor, Mark Green is your guy.

As governor, just consider that Green would put himself in charge of job creation by slashing 152 Wisconsin economic development programs resulting in about 3000 jobs lost with a single penstroke. But mostly his offers of tax relief and ways to encourage new investment in companies are hollow promises without a plan. He would offer more tax relief for job creators - can you spell corporate welfare? He would inherit a $600 million surplus from Doyle and wipe it out one way or another. Republicans don’t believe in surpluses because they think government should never “hold” money that could be otherwise used to subsidize corporate dividends. He pretends that ethic reform is important, but not important enough to agree with a simple survey of obvious solutions during his campaign.

If you think energy costs are high now, wait till Green gets in office. Our neighbor to the south, Illinois, will experience first hand the Republican platform of energy deregulation. This January, prices for home electricity are expected to rise 25% overnight in Illinois. Remember too, that our energy woes of high heating and gasoline prices didn’t begin until a certain republican started holding secret meetings in the White House with people like Ken Lay. Green agrees with the wild-west economics of total energy and environmental deregulation.

With Green in charge, Harley-Davidson will probably move not just out of the state but, out of the country. Chinese built Harleys are just one Republican governor away.

You can get a pretty good idea of what Wisconsin’s fiscal condition will be look like after a few short years of Mark Green by looking at the huge Federal debt and spending mismanagement he helped implement in the past six years in Congress. Politicians with a debt record like his don’t miraculously discover the formula to produce a balanced budget, let along think about a surplus. To think that some his supporters call him a fiscal conservative is bizarre.

His Republican party stopped people from accessing some of the most important information needed when deciding on your own health practitioner. You can find more information about the neighborhood auto mechanic or your roofers past work examples than you can find on the person who will take a scalpel to your body. All thanks to Green and his Republicans. Green can distance himself from all of this but we know better.

Ever since the Republican party took hold of the U.S. Congress and Wisconsin legislature, labor laws have been changed, environmental protections have been loosened, 200 year-old marriage rights are degraded and our Constitution has been assaulted. Green is an integral part of all of this, he will do the same in Wisconsin

Ryan Rubberstamp Well Inked

Our very own Bush desktop companion, Rep.Paul Ryan had a very busy time in Congress last week.Bush Desktop Companion

1. Paul Ryan has endorsed a measure meant to discourage people from filing lawsuits over religious displays in public buildings. He rubberstamped bill HR 2679, which would stop the courts from reimbursing the legal costs to plaintiffs who WIN their cases.

2. Ryan fully supports the Bush war in Iraq and rubberstamped another “one-time appropriation” to pay for the efforts. The bill HR5631 would redirect another $70 billion away from American schools, communities and jobs and waste it in Iraq and Afghanistan. The $70 billion earmark is not for the full year 2007, it covers only six months. This was tied into the defense spending bill of nearly a half-trillion dollars for fiscal 2007.

3. He then rubberstamped a Bush request to give the president the power to torture POW’s, enemy combatants and detainees. The bill HR 6166 contained a useless affirmation of the Geneva Conventions while giving the president the discretion to violate international law in the name of a broadly defined "national security".

4. Ryan rubberstamped bill HR 5825, another Bush request to spy/eavesdrop on domestic emails and phonecalls for up to 90 days without court warrants. This bill was not limited to foreign incoming calls as the president once explained necessary, but was expanded to include surveillance on all Americans.

5. Finally, Ryan helped defeat a Democratic motion to consider a new National Intelligence Estimate to include the latest assessment of 16 intelligence agencies which concluded that the U.S. military eforts in the middle-east has fueled more terrorism.

Once upon a time, people would be outraged by all this, but not anymore. The Party of Lincoln has been hi-jacked. The Left including true Conservatives know this. As far as I'm concerned its not worth saving, let the ship sink.

Anybody But Ryan

Rep. Paul Ryan has proven himself to be a loyal defender and enabler of the Bush agenda. According to Ryan, the Bush taxcuts for the wealthy are responsible for the recent growth in Federal tax revenue and a growing economy. However, flush with taxcut dollars, Ryan’s expanding economy and corporate handouts can’t even muster the confidence to vote a “stand on its own” minimum wage increase. Combine this taxcut with the failure to raise the Federal minimum wage for low income workers, the unjustified war in Iraq, the plan to destroy Social Security by defunding and discouraging participation, writing loopholes protecting business interests at the expense of employee pensions, drilling in ANWAR under the guise of reduced energy prices, weakening environmental laws to help keep corporate costs down at the expense of public health, the slow and ineffective response to domestic crisis(Katrina), it just goes on and on. Ryan not only supports this and voted for these bills, but has actually co-authored some of them.

Recently, Paul Ryan ambitiously conformed to the will of the executive branch of government authoring an earmark bill that empowers the president to cherry-pick appropriations. Bush has demonstrated over and over again he is above the law, exempting himself over 800 times from compliance of Constitutional bills and laws. America needs change and new leadership and the best time is now during the mid-term elections. Ryan has been a willing and useful tool for the worst president ever. Why would anyone want more of the same?

Paul Ryan has been winning the seat for the 1st Congressional District of Wisconsin with up to 65% of the vote. Oftentimes he has been chosen despite overwhelming support for democratic candidates in other races on the same ticket, which would imply that he has bi-partisan support. Don’t be fooled again, our countries poor overall performance is directly linked to those who have rubber-stamped President Bush’s initiatives and ideas, Ryan is right at the top. Congress has been voting along party lines since the great “uniter” was elected. Most of the bills and protections for the people have failed simply because of the incompetence and corporate mindset of Republicans. We can do better with anyone else.

President Bush and his rubberstamp Congress have heaped mountains of debt onto the backs of our children and grandchildren, racking up a string of annual deficits, including the current $296 billion debt - the fourth largest deficit in history. The public trust is being sold out for the sake of economic expansion and privitization. I urge the people of southern Wisconsin to stand up for their Democratic principles. Ryan stands for everything that has gone wrong in America for the past 6 years, and voting for Ryan while ignoring reality does not balance the political conscience under these circumstances no matter of how nice of a guy they think he is. If there ever was a time to seriously consider voting a straight Democratic party ticket, this is it.
