Heckenlively Running a People's Campaign

John Heckenlively, the presumed Democratic candidate for the 1st CD of Wisconsin, has announced he will be running a people's funded campaign limiting individual contributions to a maximum of $100.
Journal Times Excerpt:
"We want to make sure people understand this is a campaign from the bottom up, not from the top down," he said. "Campaigns like Paul Ryan's are run by corporate dollars - our campaign is going to be funded on the backs of people."
The Give Congress Heck campaign is not accepting any corporate contributions, campaign manager Mitch Surell said. They expect to see significant contributions in the next few weeks.

As noted in the previous post, the heavily corporate sponsored Paul Ryan has attracted $2,613,651 in this election cycle, according to Opensecrets.

Ryan's campaign issued this response to their challenger's grassroots campaign.
Journal Times Excerpt:
The Ryan for Congress campaign has 7,667 donors who have given $100 or less just this election cycle. Each month, we average 349 donations of $100 or less. The small donor, grassroots support for the campaign has been overwhelming," said Susan Jacobson, Ryan's campaign coordinator and finance director, in response. "The campaign will continue to respectfully receive contributions from supporters who wish to donate within their legal limits."
We "respectfully" receive contributions implies they won't "disrespect" corporate donations by refusing them. How's that for a slick play on words from the Ryan campaign?

But lets look at the numbers. Assuming that statement is accurate, Ryan picked up a maximum of $766,700 from $100-or-less donors, a significant amount of money. But that means 71% of Ryan's campaign support come from big-moneyed sponsors and the last time I checked on the $100 donors, most of even those modest contributors came from outside the district.

97% of Ryan's $100 Contributors Don't Live In District
Rock Netroots Excerpt: (From July 21, 2009)
After flipping through the report and checking a map, it turns out approximately $4,625 or 2.7% of the $167,975 were $100 donations from within his district - and that figure included $100 donors from the city of Milwaukee. 97.3% were donations of either more than $100 OR from outside his district.
Now, those percentages might have changed a few points since last year, but considering Ryan has been running a national fund-raising campaign, chances are even greater that most of his $100 contributors don't even live in the district.

We know what Ryan's corporate donors have bought, but what is it that these folks are buying since most don't live in the district?

Ryan Votes Against Protecting Seniors From Fraud

The House of Representatives passed the Senior Financial Empowerment Act. Introduced by Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), the legislation aims to protect seniors targeted by fraudsters and financial criminals.

The Federal Trade Commission reports that nearly one in five seniors are defrauded each year. Additionally, according to a report by MetLife Mature Market Institute, "the annual financial loss by victims of elder financial abuse is estimated to be at least $2.6 billion dollars."

With strong bipartisan support, the legislation passed by a vote of 335 to 81. But 79 Republicans, nearly half of the caucus — including Wisconsin Republicans, Sennenbrenner, Petri and Paul Ryan - voted against the legislation.
Wisconsin Internet News Excerpt:
“Representative Baldwin is one of the foremost champions of elder justice in Congress,” said Robert Blancato, National Coordinator for the non-partisan, 650-member Elder Justice Coalition. “Financial abuse, including the newest form, Internet abuse, costs seniors billions a year and must be addressed. Enacting this bill is one key solution,” Blancato said.

Radio Wing-Nutter Foams Over Newspaper's Hit Job On Heckenlively

Thursday's Janesville Gazette contained the newspaper's introductory article about John Heckenlively, the Democratic candidate for the 1st Congressional District of Wisconsin.

If you're a frequent reader of my blog, you'll understand what I mean when I say he was "royally gazetted." I don't know whether it was an exclusive interview or just stuff gleaned off the web or compiled from emails or what, but they did a major hit job on him.

Misleadingly titled, "Ryan's opponent calls for taxes and spending" and developed with parsed quotes, the context was reframed and inlaid against a schmoozy plug for believe it or not, Ryan's book about expanding GOP hyper-partisanship. Understand here, the Janesville Gazette covers the western third of the 1st CD and purports to be a legitimate news organization.

On Thursday morning, after declaring his love for Paul Ryan, the newspaper's slow-thinking and paycheck loyal radio wingnut, Stan Milam, bragged about Ryan's good fortune to have a newspaper perform such a wonderful hit job on the democratic candidate and declared Heckenlively's campaign over. Milam said, "stick a fork in him, he's over," as he used the newspaper's distortions to further ream him on the air - Fox News style.

Granted, Ryan's hometown publication stopped short of labeling Heckenlively a baby-killer or a Marxist and could have easily put the "tax and spend" title up as front-page headlines. But as it was, the newspaper along with their water-carrying mercenaries created a high-styled piece of message control that should be seen for what it is - GOP propaganda.

With Heckenlively's campaign still in it's infancy, he must be prepared for this every which way he turns and respond appropriately and decisively. Because there might not be many more chances after this before the distortions take hold.

Just for kicks here, a caller into the radio show challenged Milam to list all the great things Ryan has done for the working people in his district. Milam could not name even one single item off the top of his head and said he'll need time to work on it.

It's Official: Heckenlively Makes The Ballot For 1st CD

Kenosha News Excerpt:
Racine Democrat John Heckenlively will appear on the November ballot against Republican Congressman Paul Ryan...The board found Heckenlively had 1,048 valid nomination petition signatures, 48 more than the minimum that he needed to appear on the ballot.

Heckenlively and Ryan will now face off in the Nov. 2 election.
I don't know him personally but one thing is certain, Heckenlively knows Ryan’s record in Congress so well, that he should be able to run on and over it.
