Robson a Leader of Social Stability

At UW-Rock County on October 11th , the two candidates for the 15th Senate District of Wisconsin, challenger Republican Greg Addie and incumbent Democrat Judy Robson spoke about the things they offer to the district, This is one of those “normal” political races where mudslinging and false accusations are absent but where the candidates explained their differences and simply asked for your vote.

Months ago I felt Addie could present a serious challenge to Robson, but fortunately he came out at the forum with the same old and tired rhetoric based on fear. Addie warned of “a social unraveling” in the state and pressed people to vote for him for their own good. Speaking like a preacher from a pulpit, he proceeded to send supporters of Robson on a guilt trip saying, ”check a vote for Judy Robson, you’re going to be voting for the continued murder of the unborn.” Addie also supports defunding public education through the use of school vouchers for private schools and believes our university system is mismanaged, it “needs to be gutted,” he said.

After being the only Janesville councilman willing to give the owner of the infamous barn controversy another chance, to my surprise Addie took the typical uncompromisingly hardline of an “us against them” Republican, willing to divide the good citizens of Wisconsin for the sake of his own advancement to the state senate.

Judy Robson is clearly from the other side of the tracks regarding the issues and very much your typical compassionate Democrat. She dedicated most of her life in public service and spoke about families, good paying jobs and protecting the environment. She also supports funding public schools and wants to restore cuts to the university system.

But just as important she was able to pick up on the dividing direction of Addie’s religio-political rant, she said ”I believe that we should work with both sides of the aisle…. And not deal with these distracting issues that drive wedges between people.” This is all very commendable on her part, but she should know by now that the Republicans have taken the gloves off a long time ago and have been going bare knuckle on Democrats as witnessed by some of Addie’s remarks. However her statements are proof of her willingness to get along with others and unite for the common good, even if it means working with the dividers. Something I no longer agree with, but I can live with. She has my vote.
