Military: No Experience Necessary

This (fuzzy) photo was taken of a sign hanging on the National Guard Armory building on South Beloit Ave. in Janesville. As you can see, the qualifications to fight in the wars of the 21th century and operate high-tech weaponry are a huge hurdle for many recruits to overcome.

That angers me. I am a US veteran, but am a veteran for peace. My son just turned 18 and the Army recruiters won't leave him alone. It scares me.

I completely understand. That sign should anger everyone, but it does not. They know who they are targeting.

They just don't send people into the war zone right after they volunteer. They are trained with the weapons before they are sent into combat and defend our country. Your topic is very misleading.

That is exactly the point. The army can DRAFT and train them to use the weapons, instead of meeting quotas by targeting young people with sucker money. Remember, these are the wars for our very own survival, according to our president. Why would anyone not want to serve?

"A draft would be a disaster. The men and woman in our armed forces are highly trained and are required to use advanced equipment and weapons. You can't just take some shmuck off of the street and ask him to use the high tech equipment."

According to the army, you can!

I'm not sure how those "stupid" recruits can even read the sign. Well, according to John Kerry they are to stupid.

They should hang that sign at Harvard or Yale. See all those "smart" kids scramble forward to fight for their country.

Voluneeter military. The best military in the world and they volunteer. How great is that?

How good is our military when they drop educational requirements and raise the age to 42. When I turned 40, I needed bi-focals and Tylenol just to read the paper. I can't believe a soldier has his grandfather covering his backside, what a shame!!

It's still voleenteer. It doesn't matter if they drop the reqirements or up the age limits. Forty years old is the new thirty. There isn't a draft so I don't think you have anything to worrry about. I don't think they would accept you if you need tylenol just to read the paper. I know a lot of forty year old men that are in great physical shape and would make great soldiers if they wanted to join.

Sounds like a good idea. They want to reap the benefits of this country. They might as well be able to defend it. I like the idea.

It's such a shame that these republicans and this administration don't care about our boys. Sending them into harms way with no regret for their lives. We should disban the military and get our troops out of Iraq now. If we just leave other countries alone they will not hurt us. It's the Bush administration that has brought hatred towards Americans and that's why 9/11 happened. It's all Bushes fault. We just need to get alone with other countries and they will treat us with more respect. We are all human beings.
